Remembering Georg Baselitz

Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris honors the memory of Georg Baselitz, a monument of contemporary art and one of our major friends, who passed away on April 30.

Immediately after the dramatic fire of April 15, 2019 and at the initiative of Larry Gagosian and the Gagosian Galleries, Georg Baselitz donated one of his most famous paintings, Arrivato a passo, which was exhibited in Paris and sold for $1 million, directly benefiting the rebuilding of Notre-Dame.

Along with many other major artists of the Gagosian Galleries in Paris, New York, and London (Katharina Grosse, Takashi Murakami, Edward Ruscha, Sterling Ruby, Urs Fischer, Andreas Gursky, Giuseppe Penone, Jenny Saville, Thomas Houseago, John Curin, Balthus, and many others), Georg Baselitz was at the forefront of the worldwide wave of support to Notre-Dame.

We extend our condolences to his family and thank the Gagosian Galleries and their artists for their steadfast support of the ongoing restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris.
