Vault

The vault rests on pointed arches. To vault the spans of square bays, it is necessary to create a vault made of up three pointed arches. This assembly of six parts is called sexpartite. Each bay of Notre-Dame’s nave is vaulted by sexpartite ribs. A ribbed crossing overhanging the crossing of the transept is an architectural feat on dimensions never before reached in the Middle Ages.
